More Schilderswijk rioters jailed

justice courts legal systemFive more people have been given jail sentences of up to 42 days for their role in the recent riots in The Hague district of Schilderswijk.

Four of the five were also banned from going into the area for a six-month period because they do not live there. An 18-year-old youth was not banned from the district because it is his home but was given a 13-day suspended sentence.

None of the five will spend more time behind bars because they have served the non-suspended parts of their sentences in jail ahead of the trial.

A 23-year-old man was found not guilty of taking part in the riots because the same police officer had written up two conflicting reports about him, news agency ANP says.

A number of other rioters were given similar sentences earlier this week and on Friday.

Rioting broke out in Schilderswijk following the death of Aruban holidaymaker Mitch Henriquez after he was subjected to a violent arrest and bundled into a police van earlier this month.
