Mesdag watercolour unearthed by National Archive
A small watercolour by Dutch painter Henrik Willem Mesdag has been discovered by the National Archive.
The painting, which measures 5.4cm by 2.9cm, is an unknown piece which is not noted in any summaries of the painter’s works.
There is a poem written on the back of the river landscape, which was painted in July 1854.
The painting was discovered by a National Archive staff member in the archive of Mesdag’s brother-in-law, Samuel van Houten.
Mesdag (1831-1915) is best known for his beach landscapes and in particular for the Panorama Mesdag, a cylindrical painting of Scheveningen in the late 19th century.
