Supermarkets have again increased the number of cut price meat deals they are offering, despite pledges to sell ‘fairly-produced meat for a fair price,’ according to animal rights campaign group Wakker Dier.

In the first quarter of this year, the number of bargains offered by supermarkets rose 18% compared with the same quarter in 2014. This came despite parliament passing a motion in January condemning rock bottom prices.

Last year as a whole, the number of cheap meat deals rose 19%.

Wakker Dier considers meat to fall in the kiloknaller (kilo killer-deal) category if it costs less than €4.12 a kilo – the average price of cat food.

The organisation has been monitoring kiloknaller deals at 11 supermarket groups since 2011.
