No European football for Feyenoord next season

Feyenoord logoRotterdam football club Feyenoord will not play in Europe next season, after drawing 2-2 against Heerenveen in the second leg of the play-offs on Sunday.

The Rotterdammers lost the first leg 1- 0 at home earlier in the week.

Feynoord had been on target to qualify for the Europa League by taking third place in the Eredivisie but lost that to AZ after they were beaten by PEC Zwolle in the last match of the competition.

That defeat cost coach Fred Rutten his job and former Feyenoord and Dutch captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst took charge with immediate effect.

After Sunday’s match, Van Bronckhorst said his team had done all they could. ‘I could not ask my players to do more than they did today,’ he told reporters.

Heerenveen face Vitesse in the final play-off for the European competition.
