Dafne Schippers is first Dutch woman to break 11 seconds in 100 metre sprint

Schippers set the national record of 10.94 at the FBK Games in Hengelo on Sunday. ‘I’m very, very happy,’ Schippers told the IAAF website after the event. ‘This is the place where I wanted to show what I can do.’

Schippers’ previous best was 11.03 which she set at an IAAF meeting in Glasgow last year.

The win puts Schippers in third place in this year’s performance table. Only Elaine Thompson of Jamaica and Jenna Prandini of the US have run faster, both clocking times of 10.92.

Minutes after Schippers’ win, Sifan Hassan won the women’s 1000 metres in 2:34.68. This was also a new Dutch record and the fastest time in the world for six years.

The previous Dutch record was set by Ellen van Langen in 1993 (2.35.21).
