Utrecht, Rotterdam pull out of European Games plan, citing high costs

Detailed view of a sprinter in the starting blocksUtrecht has become the second big Dutch city after Rotterdam to bow out of plans to host the 2019 European Games in the Netherlands.

The city’s ruling executive body says the €5.5m price tag is too high given the likely return in terms of visitors and exposure. The Dutch sports association NOC*NSF wants Rotterdam and Utrecht to host the judo and volleyball events.

The NOC*NSF is holding a members’ meeting on Tuesday night to assess support for the plan to bring the games to the Netherlands. The total budget is put at €125m.

Amsterdam, The Hague and Eindhoven have not yet finalised their position.

The first edition of the European Games takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan in two months time.

Utrecht will host the start of the Tour de France later this summer.
