TV presenter steps down after ABN Amro snot nose slur

De PoelThe presenter of television current affairs show Brandpunt has stepped down following a conflict of interest dispute.

Fons de Poel, who does work on the side for ABN Amro, was criticised for calling one of the bank’s critics a ‘snot nose’ (brat) in a recent broadcast.

The critic, GroenLinks parliamentarian Jesse Klaver, had been highly critical of the bank’s remuneration policy. De Poel made the throwaway comment at the end of last week’s programme.

‘The comment has understandably led to an enormous misunderstanding and is completely at odds with the way we like to relate to people,’ De Poel said in a statement on Monday.

Broadcaster KRO-NCRV said in a reaction it was well aware of De Poel’s other work and had absolutely no doubt about his integrity. De Poel will now concentrate on a documentary series.

According to the NRC, the broadcaster is currently working on a code of conduct for all its journalist presenters.
