Part of Amsterdam city centre is to be made car free on Saturdays and eight new underground car parks are to be built to relieve pressure on parking spaces, the Parool reports on Thursday.

The Nine Streets shopping area is likely to be the first to go car-free on Saturdays as part of an experiment later this year.

Other measures in the plans include banning bikes from parts of the Red Light District and introducing a 30 kph speed limit in parts of the city centre with a lot of bike traffic, the Telegraaf says.

Transport alderman Pieter Litjens outlined the plans to the public on Thursday morning. The total package contains 50 separate measures and will cost up to €400m, Litjens said.
