An American couple have bought the Netherlands’ most expensive penthouse for €3.44m, broadcaster Nos reports.

The penthouse covers the entire 44th floor of the De Rotterdam building in the port city. The apartment covers 750 square metres, of which 70 square metres is divided over three large balconies.

The apartment was originally designed as three separate properties but when they did not sell, broker Hulstkamp-Christie’s decided to combine them into one.

Another foreign buyer is interested in taking over one of the other floors in the property in its entirety, Nos says.

The broker said the couple liked the fact they have a view of Hotel New York from their new home. The building was designed by Rem Koolhaas in 1998.
