Dozens of youngsters arrested during the New Year celebrations in the Brabant village of Veen on December 31 last year are to get compensation for wrongful arrest, lawyer Erik Thomas told Dutch media on Monday.

Thomas, who represents a large group of the 100 youngsters who were arrested after riots broke out, says they will each get €200 for every night spent in jail. The deal is likely to cost the justice ministry €50,000.

Trouble erupted after a firemen attempted to put out a car wreck which had been set on fire. Dozens of youths pelted emergency service workers with fireworks and bottles and then fled into a café. All 100 people in the café were arrested and were not released until after the New Year.

Just three of the 100 ended up in court but it is not clear what sentences they were given.

The public prosecution department is due to outline the terms of the deal in the village on Monday evening.

Veen, which traces its history back to the 12th century, is a trouble hotspot during the New Year celebrations and setting car wrecks on fire has become somewhat of a tradition.
