Prisoner escapes from Rotterdam jail

Prison interior with dramatic lightA prisoner escaped from the Hoogvliet jail in Rotterdam on Tuesday morning and police are still searching for him.

The 46-year-old man, who is not considered dangerous, is a serial shoplifter and was serving a sentence of two years. He was jailed because he is a drug addict and it was hoped the sentence would ‘break the vicious circle’, according to a police spokesman in NRC.

The man was being transferred to an appointment with an addiction specialist but made a run for it at the jail entrance.

The police internet hotline says he has an unkempt appearance and is wearing a black Umbro training suit.
