Dagobertducktaks – a special tax for the rich – is Van Dale’s word of the year

December 16, 2014

Dagobertducktaks has been voted new Dutch word of the year by visitors to the Van Dale dictionary group website with almost 18% of the vote.

A Dagobertducktaks is an extra tax for the super rich, named after Donald Duck’s uncle Dagobert – known as Scrooge McDuck in English.

Second was moestuinsocialisme – literally vegetable garden socialism – from Labour minister Jetta Klijnsma who said gardening is a good option for old people on low incomes.

Third in the poll was stemfie – taking a selfie while voting – which became a bit of a hype during the European and local elections this year.

Van Dale has organised a vote for word of the year since 2007.
