It’s official: we’ve had the first frost of winter

CIMG3826The first official frost of this winter was recorded in northern and eastern parts of the country on Thursday night, but it was not cold enough to make roads slippery.

Weather website Weeronline.nl said the coldest temperature was recorded in Leeuwarden, where the temperature fell to -2 Celsius.

Sub-zero temperatures were also recorded in Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. There was ground frost in other sheltered places.

At the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum – considered the centre of the Netherlands – the temperature remained above zero.

Last year the first official frost was recorded on November 11 and the earliest frost ever recorded was on September 15 in 1971.

Despite the light frost, warm southern air will bring relatively high temperatures for the time of year this weekend.

The KNMI weather bureau says it could be as warm as 14 Celsius in the south east of the country on Saturday. In the north east, it will be a more chilly 7 degrees.
