Four elderly women killed in car crash

Four women in their 70s were killed in a road accident in Drenthe on Wednesday night, police confirmed on Thursday morning.

The four victims, aged 72, 73, 76 and 77, were travelling in the same car when the accident happened. Police said their car ended up on the wrong side of the road for an unknown reason. A lorry travelling in the opposite direction was unable to swerve in time and ploughed into the car.

The women all died at the scene. The accident took place on the N381 between the villages of Zweeloo and Noord-Sleen.

The lorry driver was a 22-year-old local man.
