Dutch women’s football team to debut at World Cup in Canada

women's footballThe Dutch women’s football team will take part in their first ever World Cup after a 2-1 away win over Italy on Thursday night.

18-year-old striker Vivianne Miedema, who is signed to Bayern Munich, scored both Dutch goals. The Italian point was an own goal from Stephanie van der Gragt.

The World Cup takes place in Canada from June 6 to July 5 and will be played on artificial turf.

Titles

Football is an increasingly popular sport among Dutch women and girls and some 136,000 are now members of Dutch clubs. In 2001, the figure was 67,000.

In 2009 the Dutch women qualified for the European Championships for the first time and reached the semi-finals. This July, the Dutch under-19 women’s team won the European title.

Japan are the current women’s World Cup title holders. Germany won the two preceding events.
