Dirk Kuijt ends international football career

Dirk Kuijt is ending his career as an international footballer but will continue to play for Turkish club Fenerbahçe, the Telegraaf and AD report on Friday.

Kuijt, who is 34, has 104 caps as a winger and was one of the stars of the Dutch team at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The papers say Kuijt has told national coach Guus Hiddink that he is unavailable for any more European Championship qualification matches but can be called on in an emergency.

His first match for Oranje was a 3-0 win against Lichenstein in 2004. His last match was a friendly against Italy last month, which the Dutch lost 2-0.

Kuijt told the Telegraaf that the goosebumps he got when the national anthem was played ahead of a match may be what he misses most. ‘I’ve always considered it the greatest honour to play for my country,’ he told the Telegraaf.
