A large majority of MPs want changes to the current public transport smart card system, saying the current OV-chipkaart is traveller unfriendly, the AD reports on Wednesday.

Users are unhappy at the constant checking in and out they need to do – particularly when changing trains – and the fact at least €20 needs to be uploaded to a card before even a short train journey can take place, the AD says.

Dutch railway firm NS is currently testing alternatives, including systems which allow travel by smartphone and monthly billing.

Premature

However, NS spokesman Eric Trinthamer told broadcaster Nos the complaints are premature.

Five years after the introduction of the smart card system, 80% of travellers are happy with it, he said. ‘We strive continually for improvements,’ he said.

MPs will debate the OV-chipkaart system on Thursday.
