Bert Koenders was on Friday sworn in as new minister of foreign affairs by king Willem-Alexander.

The 56-year-old Labour party member replaces Frans Timmermans who has joined the European Commission.

Koenders has considerable foreign policy experience. He was overseas development minister from 2007 to 2010 before joining the UN where he is currently special envoy to Mali. He was a Labour MP from 1997 to 2007.
