Young couples turn their backs on alimony: support yourself, they say

Six out of 10 people under the age of 24 do not agree with supporting their former partners financially after divorce, according to research by TNS-Nipo.

The research, published a day ahead of national Divorce Day, shows that men, people from divorced parents and those with low levels of education are less likely to support the principle of alimony.

A majority of the youngsters questioned also said they would not get married under community property laws, which is the norm in the Netherlands.

Alimony is payable in the Netherlands for up to 12 years after the end of a marriage.
