Volunteers pick up 20 tonnes of rubbish from Dutch beaches
Volunteers picked up 20 tonnes of waste from the Dutch North Sea beaches in August, the North Sea foundation says.
This is three times the amount of waste collected in a similar campaign in 2013. Volunteers combed the beaches from Cadzand in Zeeland to the Wadden Sea island of Schiermonnikoog – a distance of some 350 kilometres.
Pieces of plastic, fishing nets and balloons were the most common objects, in addition to thousands of tops from plastic bottles. Sweet papers, cigarette ends and plastic bags were a common find on popular tourist beaches.
The volunteers also found two messages in a bottle, both from England, among the waste.
