Thousands of old Dutch traffic fines head to Belgium

Thousands of Belgian motorists are about to receive old parking tickets from the Netherlands, thanks to an agreement on privacy, according to Belgian media.

The exchange of information about traffic fines was halted in 2012 because of problems with privacy legislation but a new treaty has just come into force and that means the fines can now be sent, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Even though some of the fines date back several years, they will still have to be paid because the Netherlands has a five-year expiry on such offences.

Dutch motorists can also now expect a fine for their offences in Belgium, the Telegraaf adds.
