Housing corporation De Key will not provide alternative accommodation for families forced to leave an apartment complex in Diemen after an explosion and who are now refusing to return to their homes.

Thirty-five familes have been told they can go back on Monday and will no longer be provided with alternative housing. But some of them are refusing to return, saying they are worried about the risks, news agency ANP says.

Two people were killed in the gas explosion, forcing some 200 families to leave their homes. ‘There is nothing the matter with the building,’ a spokeswoman for De Key said. ‘But in some cases it is difficult to convince people it is safe.’

Around 50 homes have been declared unfit for habitation.
