French economist Thomas Piketty to address Dutch MPs

The French economist Thomas Piketty will address the Dutch parliament’s finance committee on November 5 to talk about inequality in income and wealth.

Piketty became a controversial figure when his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century was published in English. The book look at the outlook for global inequality and has prompted a broad and energetic debate on the distribution of wealth.

He was invited to address the Dutch parliament on the initiative of GroenLinks MP Jesse Klaver. Klaver told news agency ANP that Piketty caused controversy because he shows that economic growth does not of itself create more wealth for everyone and that inequality is increasing.
