‘Dutch girls who died in Panamanian jungle tried to phone for help’

The two Dutch students who disappeared in a Panamanian jungle earlier this year tried over several days to phone the emergency services, according to a local newspaper.

Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers disappeared on April 1 after going for a walk. Remains of their bodies were found in a remote area this summer following the discovery of a rucksack containing their mobile phones, money and a passport.

The paper says the young women tried to phone the 112 emergency number on the day they vanished and then a day later tried to reach the Panamanian emergency services.

Several other attempts were also made on other days, the paper says. It also reports that one of the phones was switched on 11 days after they disappeared but that the pin code was not used.

The lawyer representing the girls’ families has always said he does not believe the girls died after getting lost.

The rucksack also contained a camera. According to the Panamanian paper, the last pictures on the camera were taken on April 8, a week after the students disappeared. They appear to show a rock face surrounded by low vegetation, the paper says.
