Barbecue meat is full of bacteria and not animal friendly

The meat packaged up and sold for barbecues by supermarkets is not animal friendly, contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria and sometimes even nearly rotten, according to research by animal welfare group Wakker Dier.

Wakker Dier investigated 1,000 meat products bought from eight different supermarket chains.

Of the total, 109 packets were sold as special barbecue deals but not one of them carried an animal friendly logo, Wakker Dier said. This is despite the fact that they all have regular meat with animal friendly logos.

In one supermarket, 11 barbecue packets were bought and inspected. All were contaminated with bacteria and in five cases with E-coli. Three of the 11 showed clear signs of rotting.

Barbecues are a source of food poisoning because the raw meat is often left out in the sun too long or it is not cooked thoroughly. This means supermarkets should be extra careful about good hygiene, Wakker Dier said.
