Amsterdam picked as one of 2020 football championship hosts

Amsterdam is one of 13 cities picked to host Uefa’s 2020 European football championships and will stage three group and one round of 16 games in the Arena stadium.

‘It is fantastic that we can stage such an event in the Netherlands again after 20 years,’ said Bert van Oostveen, of the Dutch football association KNVB. ‘Everyone worked hard to prepare the bid and this is our reward.’

Van Oostveen says the news means that the Dutch national team will play two home matches, if they qualify for the event. Qualifications are currently under way for the 2016 tournament.

The Netherlands and Belgium co-hosted the European championships 14 years ago. The final was played in Rotterdam’s Kuip stadium.
