Some 10% of the people currently receiving a Dutch state pension live abroad, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

Last year 3.2 million people received an AOW pension, of whom 320,000 lived outside the Netherlands. This is up 22% on five years ago. Some 64,000 people claiming a Dutch state pension live in Belgium. Spain, Germany and Turkey are the next most popular destinations, the CBS said.

Of the 3.2 million pension claims, just over 80% are for the full amount – currently €1,045.29 for a single person and €1,443.38 for a couple. In order to qualify for a full state pension, you must have lived in the Netherlands for 50 years since the age of 15.

The national state pension bill is now almost €33bn a year, the CBS said.
