Sunday at the supermarket gains in popularity

The number of people shopping in supermarkets on Sunday has doubled over the past two years, according to research carried out by sector monitor GfK.

GfK figures show that six out of ten people visit a supermarket on Sunday an average of eight times a year. Most of them are young and live in the Randstad and the south of the Netherlands.

The amount they spend has tripled since 2010 to €1bn, giving supermarkets 3.15% of their turnover from Sunday sales.

However, Sunday opening has affected sales during late-night openings.

In total, supermarkets saw a slight rise in turnover in July of 0.1% to €3.18bn.
