Dutch say ‘Eh’ more than any other word

‘Eh’ is the most used word in spoken Dutch according to a new book listing the 5,000 most frequently used words in the language.

A Frequency Dictionary of Dutch, compiled by Carole Tiberius and Tanneke Schoonheim, says that Dutch people say ‘green’ and ‘yellow’ more often than ‘blue’, and ‘dog’ and ‘fish’ more often than ‘cat’.

‘Sunday’ is said more often than ‘Tuesday’.

In 5,000th place is ‘stones’.

The book is handy for people who want to learn Dutch because every word has the English translation and a sentence showing how to use it.
