Consumer confidence falters after months of improvement

Dutch consumers were less confident in the economic situation in August after months of steady growth, possibly as a result of the tense political situation on the international level, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.

The index fell four points to -6, which is still above its average over the past 20 years. In April 2000, the indicator reached an all-time high of 27 and in February 2013 the indicator reached an all-time low (-44).

In particular, consumers were more pessimistic about their personal financial situation over the next 12 months and 38% expect unemployment to continue to rise, the CBS said.
