Motorists face busy roads due to holiday traffic, road works

Motoring organisations say the Dutch roads will be extremely busy on Friday afternoon as the main holiday exodus begins and a number of top events take place.

The summer holiday break is staggered in the Netherlands but today schools in the centre of the country close – the last region to do so.

In addition, events such as the end of the Nijmegen four-day march, the Tilburg fair and Rotterdam’s summer carnival will add to the pressure on the roads, the ANWB motoring organisation said.

Roadworks are adding to the problems. The Coen tunnel under the IJ in Amsterdam is closed and parts of the A12 and A13 are also closed for essential road works.

Holidaymakers heading south are also being warned they face delays on roads to Spain and the French cost.
