More arrests made in connection with Dutch Cup final fireworks

Twenty-five men have now been arrested in connection with a long investigation into crowd trouble at April’s KNVB Cup final between Ajax and Zwolle, police said on Thursday.

Three men reported to the police after their photographs were shown on a police website. The other 22 were arrested earlier this week following what police said was a lengthy and difficult investigation to identify the fans responsible for throwing fireworks.

Underdogs Zwolle eventually thrashed Ajax 5-1 but the match was held up for 30 minutes after Ajax fans began pelting the pitch with fireworks. In total, 33 fans were arrested on the day itself.

Court

On Thursday morning, Dutch police put five photographs of troublemakers they had failed to identify online. Three of the five had come forward by Thursday afternoon.

Twelve other suspects identified in the investigation were not home when police went to arrest them on Wednesday and will be picked up later.

The group will appear in court in November and face a stadium ban, Nos television says.
