Groningen action group ‘incensed’ at inclusion in terrorist threat report

An action group fighting natural gas extraction in Groningen is ‘incensed’ to find itself mentioned in a new report on the terrorist threat in the Netherlands.

The report from the Dutch counter-terrorism unit NCTV says the actions of Schokkend Groningen have hardened and become more professional since the beginning of this year with the involvement of the national environmental group Groen Front.

Schokkend Groningen is afraid it will be seen as a terrorist organisation and wants a meeting with counter-terrorism chief Dick Schoof.

The group refutes the involvement of Groen Front and says it operates out of ‘self-defence’, the Nos reports.

Groen Front told the broadcaster the people of Groningen do not need encouragement to act against the gas extraction.

The province of Groningen has been suffering from earthquakes caused by gas extraction for years. Last year the government agreed to reduce the amount of gas that could be extracted, but this move has not lessened the actions taken by the group.
