Dutch national football team coach Louis van Gaal faces hard choices ahead of the semi-final match on Wednesday evening against Argentina.

Both defender Ron Vlaar and midfielder Nigel de Jong are still recovering from injuries picked up in previous matches.

Vlaar is recovering from a knee injury from the game against Costa Rica, but could be match-ready.

De Jong picked up a groin injury during the game with Mexico and faces a dilemma. Medics say he is not fit enough to play, but the player is desperate to get back on the pitch.

Bug

Striker Robin van Persie was also doubtful on Tuesday, having picked up a stomach bug and training separately from the rest of the team. However, Van Gaal said on Wednesday that he expects Van Persie to play.

The selection will be announced later on Wednesday.

Outdoor screens

Meanwhile, the Netherlands is gearing up for the match, although big screens showing the match will be hard to find in Amsterdam.

The one on the Museumplein has been removed and will not return unless Oranje reaches the final, and other borough councils have refused to licence outdoor screens. Supporters will have to head for the Arenapark.

Early start

Three theatres are bringing performance times forward to cater for football fans. The Beatrix Theater in Utrecht, the Circustheater in Scheveningen and Theater Carré in Amsterdam will begin performances one hour earlier.

The Netherlands and Argentina have met four times before in a World Cup, with the Dutch winning twice, the Argentinians once and one match a draw.

Wednesday’s game begins at 22.00 hours.
