TV presenter steps down as Unicef ambassador over cocaine tweet

Dutch television host Nicolette van Dam has resigned as a United Nation’s children’s ambassador after tweeting a photo that had been manipulated to show two Colombian footballers snorting white lines off the pitch.

Van Dam apologised and removed the tweet after angry reactions to the faked photo. She then tweeted an apology. According to AP, Unicef condemned the post in a statement, saying it was ‘inappropriate and highly offensive’.

The Dutch Unicef national committee issued a statement saying ‘Nicolette did not realised there was so much sensitivity around the issue in South America’. The reactions to the tweet made her position as ambassador untenable. ‘We really regret this,’ the organisation said.
