Street cleaners and rubbish collectors to strike in Amsterdam

Amsterdam rubbish collectors and street cleaners will go on strike next Monday for three days, their union Abvakabo said on Friday.

From Monday to Wednesday no rubbish will be collected, no bins emptied and no streets cleaned, the union said.

The cleaners have been involved in terms and conditions negotiations with the local authorities’ association VNG since last year. ‘The VNG negotiators refuse to make a concrete offer,’ the union said.

Street cleaners and rubbish collectors from all the Amsterdam boroughs are taking part. Colleagues in Groningen and Utrecht have said they will join in, website nu.nl says.

If there are any major problems, fires or risks to public health, teams will be sent in. ‘It is not our intention to put the city in danger,’ the union said.

Early last month, cleaners working for railway company NS were on strike for better pay and conditions.
