How to avoid holiday traffic jams, according to the ANWB

The best time to head of on a summer holiday at a Mediterranean resort is a Sunday or 16.00 hours on a Saturday, says Dutch motoring organisation ANWB.

The ANWB analysed its own traffic reports and those from satnav maker TomTom and found if you plan to head off on holiday on a Friday or Saturday, around 16.00 hours is the least busy time.

The association studied three routes: Utrecht to Perpignan, Nice and Biarritz. ‘We only looked at France because that is where most Dutch people go,’ said a spokesman. ‘16.00 is a good time to leave because you are after the main surge.’

This year, August 2 and 9 are likely to be particularly bad on the roads to France because people will be both leaving for and returning from holiday, the ANWB says.
