Crowdfunder Kickstarter has ‘difficult launch’ in the Netherlands

The world’s biggest crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter, has had a difficult beginning in the Netherlands, broadcaster Nos says on Monday.

Kickstarter launched in the Netherlands two months ago but only 10 of the 70 projects added to the site since then have generated the funding they asked for, the broadcaster says.

The platform, launched in the US five years ago, has raised more than $1bn since it started and financed 60,000 projects.

‘I had expected more projects would do well,’ crowdfunding expert Gijsbert Koren told Nos. ‘This is a sign that Kickstarter is not the ideal platform for everyone. You cannot make payments using [Dutch banking system] iDeal and the website is in English, not Dutch. Some projects might be better off elsewhere.’

Among the projects which have won funding since the Dutch launch is one to make bacon-flavoured sprinkles for on bread (bacon hagelslag) and another to make wooden handbags.
