Van Gaal makes ‘difficult choices’, finalises World Cup squad

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has named his preliminary squad of 30 for next month’s World Cup in Brazil.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel is the biggest missing name, but he withdrew from the selection process because of continuing injury problems, the AD says on Wednesday.

‘It is always difficult to make choices,’ Van Gaal said. ‘So many players have been so positive in their approach. But we have made a well-considered choice.’

Feyenoord leads the pack with seven players in the squad. There are four from PSV and three from Ajax.

Sixteen of the 30 play for a Dutch club. Van Gaal will make his final selection of 20 field players and three keepers by June 2, the deadline set by Fifa.
