New look Rotterdam council to focus on the ordinary Rotterdammer

The new look Rotterdam city council is to focus on public safety and environmental issues, and it will be more difficult for disadvantaged people to move to the city, according to the strategy outlined on Thursday afternoon.

Right-wing populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam, the political party led by Pim Fortuyn when it was founded in 2001, is back as part of the port city’s coalition government.

Leefbaar (which translates as ‘liveable’) will form a coalition administration from the city together with the D66 liberals and the Christian Democrats.

Leefbaar will provide three of the six aldermen, with party leader Joost Eerdmans taking the public safety and ‘outdoor spaces’ portfolio. D66 will have two aldermen – one of which will be culture – while the CDA will take education. The new coalition’s motto is ‘Rotterdam: full steam ahead’.
