Manchester United confirms Van Gaal as manager

Louis van Gaal, currently manager of the Dutch national football team, was confirmed as the new coach of Manchester United on Monday.

The 62-year-old Van Gaal will take the Dutch team to the World Cup in Brazil in June before joining the English premier division club next season.

The former footballer has previously coached Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern Munich.

‘I always wanted to work in the English premier league,’ Van Gaal told news agency Reuters. ‘Coaching the biggest club in the world fills me with pride.’

Manchester United’s chairman Ed Woodward told Reuters: ‘Old Trafford gives him a suitable platform to write new chapters in the history of the club.’

Ryan Giggs, who took over as interim coach following the abrupt departure of David Moyes, will be assistant coach.
