The fines for lorry drivers who fiddle their time-keeping will almost triple from Saturday, according to the transport ministry.

Drivers who alter the registration of rest period and driving times will face a fine of up to €1,500, compared with €550 at present. Employers face a maximum fine of €4,400.

Transport ministry inspectors say it is important that drivers stick to the permitted working hours out of road safety considerations. In addition, breaking the rules is unfair competition with drivers who do not fiddle their hours.

Transport ministry checks have shown 20% of drivers fiddle their hours. However, these checks focused on companies known to have offended in the past and are not representative, transport company organisations told broadcaster Nos.
