Veluwe heath fire under control, one tenth of national park destroyed

The huge heath fire which led to the Hoge Veluwe national park near Arnhem being evacuated on Sunday has finally been extinguished and the park is set to reopen on Monday, Nos television says.

Southern parts of the park will remain shut so the fire brigade can finish the clear-up operation and douse any remaining fires.

The blaze destroyed over 527 hectares of heath – around one tenth of the national park’s total area.

Combating the fire was made particularly difficult because of the strong winds. The park’s Kröller Müller museum, which includes a number of Van Goghs in its collection, was also closed and the art moved to a fire-resistant depot.
