Euro 2020 football will cost €19m to stage in Amsterdam

Staging four matches in the 2020 European football championship will cost €16m to €19m and bring in up to €75m in earnings, sports minister Edith Schippers has told MPs.

The Dutch football association KNVB wants to bring three group matches and one round of 16 match to Amsterdam as part of a pan-European event.

The 2020 championship will be played across 13 countries. Twelve cities will stage the group and round of 16 games, while one host city will present the semi-finals and final.

To qualify for the final rounds, a city must have a stadium with a capacity of at least 60,000. The cancellation of plans to build a replacement stadium for the Kuip in Rotterdam means Amsterdam’s Arena is the country’s biggest. But it only has maximum capacity of 53,000.
