Dutch lead EU in part-time jobs, most don’t want to work more hours

Just over half of Dutch workers have a part-time job – almost double the next highest concentration of part-timers, who live in Germany, according to figures from the European statistics office Eurostat.

In total, 50.7% of Dutch workers have a part-time job. In Germany the figure is just over 27% while in Austria, Sweden and Britain 26% of people work part-time.

In addition, just 4.2% of Dutch part-timers would like to work more hours, compared with a European average of almost 23%. Most part-time jobs in the Netherlands are done by women.

Within the EU as a whole, 10 million part-time workers are under-employed and would like to work longer hours, the report shows.

Earlier this year, the OECD secretary-general Yves Leterme said too many women in the Netherlands work part-time and this is contributing to low labour productivity and less economic growth.
