Ajax fail to take Dutch league title and Feyenoord move closer

The gap between Amsterdam football club Ajax and Feyenoord of Rotterdam narrowed in this weekend’s football action after Ajax drew 1-1 against Vitesse.

Arch rival Feyenoord, currently second in the Eredivisie, beat RKC Waalwijk 2-0, closing the gap slightly at the top of the table.

With three matches to go, Ajax are still six points clear of Feyenoord who are four points clear of league number three FC Twente.

The Dutch football association is keen to see both Ajax and Feyenoord playing at the same time next weekend because both games could be crucial in the title race.

If Ajax beats ADO Den Haag and Feyenoord fails to beat PSV Eindhoven, the Amsterdammers will have won their fourth league title in a row.

Ajax coach Frank de Boer says he would favour a 14.30 kick-off for both matches. ‘I don’t think it would be very wise if 50,000 people are left hanging around the Ajax stadium waiting for the outcome of the Feyenoord match,’ De Boer is quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
