Urk fishermen strike over low plaice and sole prices

Some 200 fishermen from Urk have gone on strike and the fishing village’s fish market has been shut in protest at low prices for plaice and sole.

The fishermen claim they are being offered less than cost price for the fish and have called on colleagues in Scheveningen and on the Wadden Sea island of Texel to join the protests.

‘We are catching great fish at dump prices,’ spokesman Renze de Boer told RTL news.

A spokesman for the Urk fish wholesalers told RTL consumers will not yet feel the impact of the strike because there are enough frozen supplies at present.

The spokesman said he understood the trawlermen’s position but said prices have been depressed by oversupply.
