Parliament backs lowering tax-free pension build-up

A majority of MPs on Thursday evening backed plans to reduce the amount workers can save tax free towards their company pension.

The limit is being reduced from 2.25% to 1.875% – a figure agreed between ministers and members of the opposition parties D66, ChristenUnie and SGP.

The reduction will generate an extra €3bn for the treasury.

Other opposition parties, pension experts and the Council of State have criticised the plan, saying it will be impossible for youngsters to build up a proper pension.
