Finally, the US appoints a new ambassador to the Netherlands
After a period of over two years, the US once again has an ambassador in The Hague.
The senate on Thursday voted in favour of naming lawyer Timothy Broas as America’s new representative in the Netherlands, the embassy announced on Twitter.
The naming of Broas comes just ahead of president Obama’s visit to the Netherlands to attending the Nuclear Security Summit at the end of this month.
Broas should have been named in 2012 but he withdrew after he was caught drunk-driving.
A partner in law firm Winston & Strawn, Broas has no diplomatic experience. However, he collected more than $500,000 for Obama’s 2012 campaign from family members, colleagues and other wealthy associates, the Washington Post said in April 2012, when his candidacy was announced.
The US has not had an ambassador in the Netherlands since Fay Hartog Levin left in September 2011.
