Dutch diplomat flees Ukraine, says situation in Crimea is ‘dangerous’

Robert Serry, the Dutch diplomat and United Nations envoy to Ukraine, was forced to flee the country after being threatened by armed men in camouflage uniforms while in Crimea.

Serry, a former Dutch ambassador to Ukraine, told CNN he hopes his experience ‘serves as a reminder to all how dangerous the situation has become’. He was in the country on behalf of UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

Serry managed to get away after the men stopped the car he was travelling in and said they had orders to take him to the airport. Serry escaped to a nearby café and was eventually taken safely to the airport and left the country.
